THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for September 5, 1992)
Bobby Fischer isn't the only American chess player in the
news these days. Maybe the best player in the US at present,
if recent tournament results are any indication, is a 32 year
old Grandmaster who lives in Lexington, Kentucky via Moscow.
He has a US Chess Federation rating second only to that of
Gata Kamsky. And his tournament successes are already
legendary, having won outright or tied for first in 15 of the
17 events in which he has participated, including the 1992
Chicago Open, the World Open in Philadelphia and now, the US
Open, played 2-14 August in Dearborn, Michigan. Almost certainly
the strongest player between the two coasts, this apparent new
king of the "American Swiss" is Gregory Kaidanov.
His victory at Dearborn, however, was not exactly a "walk in
the park" for the man who has won virtually everything in
sight since arriving on American soil only a short while ago.
Although Kaidanov finished with an undefeated 10-2 score,
good enough to give him sole possession of first place and
the $5,000 cash prize that went along with the US Open title,
he did concede four draws and barely escaped defeat against
a determined John Fedorowicz.
Six players finished only one-half point back with 9.5 out of
12, including GMs Fedorowicz and Anatoly Lein, IMs David
Strauss and Benjamin Finegold and Masters Ronald Burnett and
Ray Stone.
What's that old saying about "throwing everything but the
kitchen sink" at someone? Well, that's exactly what
Fedorowicz did to Kaidanov in the eighth round--only to end
up a pawn down in the ending.
